Astronomy Merit Badge Program

The Lehigh Valley Amateur Astronomical Society offers Astronomy Merit Badge counseling through volunteer counselors and outreach members. Sessions may be arranged for individuals or groups based on counselor availability.

Scheduling

There are no regularly scheduled sessions. Activities are arranged individually with counselors.

Weather

Outdoor observing activities may be weather dependent and subject to rescheduling.

Who Can Attend?

Sessions may be conducted for individual Scouts, troops, or organized groups.

Merit Badge Requirements Overview

1. Safety

  • Understand astronomy-related hazards.
  • Discuss first aid procedures.
  • Learn safe nighttime and solar observing practices.

2. Light Pollution

  • Explain how light and air pollution affect astronomy.

3. Telescopes & Binoculars

  • Compare telescope types.
  • Learn telescope accessories and care.
  • Understand observational tools.

4. The Night Sky

  • Identify constellations and bright stars.
  • Observe the Big Dipper and Polaris.
  • Explain the Milky Way.

5. Planets

  • Identify visible planets.
  • Create an observation chart.
  • Observe and document a planet.

6. The Moon

  • Sketch lunar features and phases.
  • Track Moon movement.
  • Explain eclipses and lunar orbit.

7. The Sun & Stars

  • Learn about the Sun and solar activity.
  • Identify star colors and meanings.
  • Understand stellar properties.

8. Astronomy Participation

  • Visit an observatory or planetarium.
  • Participate in observing sessions.
  • Host or assist with a public star party.
  • Create an astronomy imaging project.

9. Astronomy Careers

  • Research astronomy-related careers.
  • Discuss educational requirements and opportunities.

Volunteer Outreach Program

The Lehigh Valley Amateur Astronomical Society is a non-profit organization staffed entirely by volunteers. We do not charge fees for Merit Badge counseling sessions, but donations are greatly appreciated and help support our educational outreach programs.
